Belem Tower is one of the most important sights in Lisbon. It was constructed in the 16th C . It is the only building in the world erected entirely in the Manueline style. Belem Tower is situated at the mouth of the Tagus river and is divided into two parts – the tower and the hexagonal bastion. There are spaces for 17 cannons in the walls. The sole tower is 35 metres high. Its lowest floors are located underwater. Above we may find terraces with turrets. While standing there we can admire breathtaking views on the ocean.

One of the most curious facts that I found out was that Belem Tower was a part of the defense system. Later it was transformed into a prison. In the 19th Józef Bem was imprisoned here. Today Belem Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is possible to buy a combined ticket to Tower of Belem and Jeronimos Monastery which is situated nearby. I paid only 13 Euro for such a ticket. I totally recommend it!
